How to Check if AI Recommends Your Pet Business (and What to Fix First)

By Samantha Quinones ·

To check if AI recommends your pet business, open ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity in a private window, ask each one for the best groomer, vet or trainer near your town, and write down who gets named. Then ask each tool what it knows about your business by name and check the details. Ask twice, because answers change from one ask to the next. If you're missing or described wrong, the fix usually starts with your Google Business Profile, your reviews and the other sites that mention you, not with your website alone.

This post walks through the three tests I run first in every audit, how to read the results, and what to fix in what order. The tests come from the Unmissable Checklist, my free 20-point version of the framework I use with clients.

Key Takeaways

  • You can test your own AI visibility in about 5 minutes with three copy-paste prompts and a Google search.
  • Ask each AI tool twice in a private window; answers vary, so score what you see most often.
  • Google says there are no special requirements to appear in its AI Overviews or AI Mode: the same basics that help you in Google Search apply.
  • For local pet businesses, the fastest wins are usually a complete Google Business Profile, steady recent reviews and consistent listings on other sites.
  • The checks are signals AI tools are known to use, not a guaranteed formula, so re-test every few months.

Why Check Now?

Pet owners are already asking AI. In BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey, 45% of consumers said they had used ChatGPT or another AI tool for local business recommendations, up from 6% the year before. When an AI assistant answers “who's the best groomer near me,” it usually names only a few businesses. If you're not one of them, you may never know you were left out.

The good news: you don't need a special trick. Google's own guidance on its AI features says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and points to the basics instead, including keeping your Business Profile information up to date. That's work any clinic, groomer or daycare can do.

The 3-Test Check (About 5 Minutes)

Swap in your details where you see CAPS. Use a private browser window so your own history doesn't skew the answers.

Check 9: AI names you when asked for the best near you

The core test: when a customer asks an AI assistant for a recommendation, are you in the answer?

Test it: Open a new chat in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity (use a private window if you can) and paste:
I just moved to YOUR TOWN. Who are the best YOUR SERVICE (for example dog groomers, vets or dog trainers) near me, and why?Ask each one twice; answers vary.

Good looks like: You're named by at least 2 of the 3 tools. Named by 1 counts as Partly.

The fix: This score rises as the rest of this checklist improves, especially reviews, your Google profile and other sites mentioning you. Write down who AI named instead of you: that's your real competition.

Check 10: AI describes you correctly

Being mentioned isn't enough. AI has to get your services, location and reputation right.

Test it: In the same tools, paste:
What do you know about YOUR BUSINESS NAME in YOUR TOWN? What services do they offer, where are they, what are their hours, and what do customers say?

Good looks like: Your services, town, hours and contact details are right, and the review summary is fair. Wrong details, a mix-up with another business, or “I don't have information” counts as No.

The fix: Make your business name, services, address and hours identical on your website, Google profile and main directories, and add a clear About paragraph to your homepage: who you are, what you do, where, and since when.

Check 20: Trusted sites list you, with matching details

Before recommending you, AI tools cross-check what other sites say about you.

Test it: Search your business name and town. Check Yelp, Facebook, Apple Maps, Bing and any pet-industry sites you're on. Then search best YOUR SERVICE in YOUR TOWN and look for local best-of lists, awards and articles.

Good looks like: Your name, address, phone and website match exactly everywhere, and at least one trusted local or industry source mentions you: a best-of award, a chamber listing, a rescue partner page or local news.

The fix: Fix mismatches first. Then go after one new mention each quarter: enter a local best-of award, join your chamber, or offer to be quoted by local media.

What to Fix First

For most pet businesses I audit, this order gets the most movement for the least effort:

  1. Complete your Google Business Profile and pick the primary category that matches the service you most want to be found for (Pet groomer, Veterinarian, Dog trainer, Dog day care center).
  2. Make reviews a weekly habit, and reply to every one. Ask the same day, with a direct link.
  3. Fix mismatched listings on Yelp, Facebook, Apple Maps and Bing, then go after one new local mention a quarter, like a best-of award or a rescue partner page.
  4. Give each main service its own page, with what's included, who it's for and a price range.
  5. Rewrite the first two sentences of your homepage and service pages so they say what you do and where.

If you want the step-by-step version for your Google profile, I wrote a guide on optimizing a Google Business Profile for vet clinics that works for most pet businesses, and a look at what AI looks at before it recommends a vet.

Run the Full 20-Point Check

These three tests are a starting point. The Unmissable Checklist covers all 20 checks across four pillars (technical foundation, authority, AI and search optimization, and local and trust signals), each with the exact prompt or search to run, what good looks like and the fix. You score yourself out of 100 in about 20 minutes.

A note on what this can and can't tell you: these are signals search engines and AI tools are known to use, not a guaranteed formula. No one outside the AI companies knows exactly how they choose, so test, fix, and test again.

FAQ

How do I know if ChatGPT recommends my pet business?

Open ChatGPT in a private window and ask for the best groomers, vets or trainers near your town, then check whether you're named. Ask twice, since answers vary, and repeat the test in Gemini and Perplexity.

Why does AI recommend a competing pet business instead of mine?

Usually because the competitor has more trusted signals: more recent reviews, a more complete Google Business Profile, or mentions on local lists and partner sites. AI tools cross-check those sources before naming a business.

Do I need a new website to show up in AI answers?

Not usually. Google says there are no special requirements for its AI features. Most pet businesses get further by completing their Google profile, earning steady reviews and making each service clear on the site they already have.

How often should I re-check whether AI recommends my pet business?

Every two to three months, or after a big change like a new service or location. AI answers shift as the tools update and as new reviews and mentions come in.

Is there a free AI visibility checklist for pet businesses?

Yes. The Unmissable Checklist is a free 20-point self-audit with copy-paste prompts and a score out of 100. If you'd rather I run it for you, I also offer a free audit.
