What AI Looks At Before It Recommends a Vet
By Samantha Quinones · October 25, 2026
More pet owners are asking AI tools questions like "best vet near me" before they ever open a practice website. The answer they get is a short list, often with a sentence or two about why each practice made it.
I wanted to see what those sentences are built from. So in September, I asked ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode the same question about Summit County, Colorado, three times each, starting a fresh conversation every time.
The first thing I noticed: the tools didn't agree with each other. Each platform led with a different practice, and asking the exact same question twice sometimes changed the list. There is no single "AI ranking" a practice can win. What matters more is the information AI has to work with.
Key Takeaways
- AI tools don't agree with each other, and their answers shift from month to month. There is no single AI ranking to win.
- Local awards and news coverage give AI a concrete reason to recommend a practice.
- Plain, specific service pages get quoted almost word for word.
- Practical details like hours and availability stand out in AI answers.
- AI answers can be wrong, so check what the tools say about your practice every few months.
A Month Later, the List Moved
In late October, I asked again. Same question, same three tools, plus questions about specific towns, emergencies and mobile vets.
The answers shifted more than I expected. The practice Google named first in all three September answers wasn't first in any October answer. Two practices Google listed every time in September didn't appear at all. On another tool, the practice that led two of three answers in September wasn't mentioned once.
Nobody's care changed in a month. What changed is what the tools picked up and how they weighed it. That's why the patterns below matter more than any one month's list. (For the bigger picture, see how AI is changing the way pet owners find veterinary care.)
| What AI used | Where I saw it | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Local recognition | ChatGPT cited a Best of Summit news story | Show your awards and press on your website |
| Plain service wording | Perplexity quoted practice websites | List services, animals and towns in everyday words |
| Practical details | Google AI Mode highlighted posted hours | Make hours and booking obvious and consistent |
| Accuracy | Wrong "only clinic" claims, wrong state, a closed practice | Check AI answers every few months |
1. Local Recognition Gives AI a Reason to Recommend You
ChatGPT's answers kept pointing to Buffalo Mountain Animal Hospital's Best of Summit recognition. One answer linked directly to a Summit Daily profile of the practice, written after voters named it the county's best veterinary practice.
That's community trust turned into a citation. An award, a local news story or a feature in a community publication gives AI something concrete to point to when it explains a recommendation.
What to do: If your practice has won a local award or been covered in the news, make sure it's mentioned on your website and linked where people can find it. If you haven't, community involvement and local press are worth the effort for reasons that go well beyond AI.
2. Clear Service Pages Get Quoted
Perplexity cited practice websites directly, and its descriptions mirrored what those sites said. Farmers Korner Veterinary Hospital's website is a good example: it plainly lists routine care, diagnostics, surgery, and international and domestic health certificates. That kind of plain, specific wording is easy for AI to repeat.
What to do: Spell out what you offer in everyday language: the animals you treat, the services you provide and the towns you serve. A page that says "we offer health certificates for domestic and international travel" is far more useful than one that says "comprehensive care for your best friend."
3. Practical Details Stand Out
Google AI Mode repeatedly highlighted Silverthorne Veterinary Hospital's extended hours. The practice's homepage states them right up front: open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., 365 days a year. When a pet owner is choosing quickly, availability is a real reason to pick one practice over another, and AI treated it that way.
What to do: Put your hours, location and how to book where they can't be missed, and make sure they match on your Google Business Profile, Yelp and any other listing. If you offer something practical, like evening hours, same-day appointments or house calls, say so clearly.
Being Mentioned Is Only Half the Check
AI answers can sound confident and still be wrong. In one response, an AI tool described a single local clinic as the only one in the county offering a particular service. At least one other clinic advertised that same service on its own homepage. That claim showed up again in October.
October added new examples. Asked about a mobile vet in Summit County, Colorado, one tool recommended a low-cost mobile clinic run by the humane society in Summit County, Ohio. Another tool recommended a local practice for house calls that has permanently closed.
None of the practices involved did anything wrong. The AI filled gaps with guesses. But a pet owner reading those answers could easily skip a practice that would have been a great fit, or call one that no longer exists.
What to do: Every few months, ask a few AI tools the questions your clients actually ask, such as "emergency vet near me" or "vet that does house calls in Summit County," and read what they say about you. Check the details: services, hours, location and anything described as unique. If something is wrong, fixing the source information on your website and listings is the best place to start.
The Takeaway for Independent Practices
You don't need to chase AI. You need to make the facts about your practice easy to find and easy to trust:
- Earn and show local recognition. Awards, news coverage and community involvement give AI a reason to mention you.
- Describe your services plainly. Specific, everyday wording gets repeated.
- Make the practical details obvious. Hours, location, booking and anything that sets you apart.
- Check what AI says about you, regularly. The list moves month to month, and being named matters less if the details are wrong.
None of this is new advice. It's the same thing that helps a pet owner choose you from your website. AI just makes it matter more. It's also the starting point for my SEO and AI visibility work for veterinary clinics.
FAQ
How do AI tools decide which vet to recommend?
They summarize what they find online: practice websites, review sites, local news and award lists. In my tests, each recommendation usually came with a reason pulled from one of those sources, like an award, a list of services or posted hours.
Why does AI recommend different vets at different times?
The tools search the web fresh and weigh sources differently each time. In my tests, the first practice named changed between September and October, and sometimes between two identical questions asked minutes apart.
Can a vet practice pay to show up in AI answers?
In the answers I tested, sponsored listings appeared separately from the recommendations, and I didn't count them. What a practice can control is the information AI finds: its website, listings, reviews and local coverage.
How can I check what AI says about my practice?
Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode the questions your clients ask, like "best vet in" plus your town or "emergency vet near me," each in a fresh chat. Note whether you're named, and check every detail it gives about you.
What should I fix first if AI gets my practice wrong?
Start with the sources AI reads: your website, then your Google Business Profile and other listings. Make your hours, services and location match everywhere, because AI tools often repeat what those sources say.
Curious What AI Says About Your Practice?
I put together private AI snapshots for independent veterinary practices: what ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google say about you, where the details are off and what to fix first. Your results are shared only with you.

How I tested: On September 25, 2026, around noon Mountain Time, I ran nine live searches: three fresh conversations each in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode, all asking "best vet in Summit County, Colorado" with no practice names. On October 25, 2026, I repeated that question three times on each tool and added questions about individual towns, emergencies and mobile vets. In October I was signed in to Google and to a new Perplexity account, and used ChatGPT with personalization turned off; in September all three were signed out. This is a small snapshot, not a statistically representative study, and results vary with timing, location, account and wording. Examples describe what the AI tools displayed and cited; they are not an evaluation of any practice's quality of care.
